Un viaje hacia las mejores olas del mundo en tan solo una camiseta. Swells incesantes en un lienzo. Sets perfectamente ordenados en una quilla. Alex Krastev, es un surfer hambriento que sueña con el mar a pesar de bañarse a diario en las playas de California. Es propietario de su propia compañía de arte y fotografía, Future Seas, donde ha creado proyectos para RipCurl, Carver o Quiksilver. Así que sí, puede que ahora mismo lleves una de sus prendas o tengas en tu cuarto su poster del RipCurl Padang Padang. Amante de la cultura marroquí, sus obras gozan de ese toque “Old School” actual de quien no se declara demasiado partidario del uso de la tecnología durante el proceso creador y creativo. 

Crecí en Bulgaria hasta los diecisiete y después, me mudé con mi familia a Agadir (Marruecos). En Bulgaria, empecé a patinar y con ello, mi fascinación con todo lo relacionado con el arte en las tablas. Me gustaba mucho el estilo de Jim Phillips de Santa Cruz con todas esas caras y calaveras , así como el estilo artístico de Curt Johnson.

En Marruecos, el ambiente surfero hizo mover mi interés de manera gradual hacia el surf y su estilo de vida y creo que, hasta hoy, es la inpiración más sólida que he tenido.

En cuanto a mi estilo, me considero un artista con muchas caras dentro de la industria y el estilo de vida del surf y el skate. Tomo fotos, pinto, hago collages en papel, me encanta la ilustración a tinta…pero siempre utilizando la singular cultura marroquí como fondo y base para cada uno de mis trabajos.

Pero, en función al proyecto, mis técnicas cambian. Procuro usar materiales orgánicos en mis pinturas como papel o madera e incluso, styrofoam (el mismo que se usa en las tablas de surf). Pero si estoy trabajando en el diseño de camisetas para RipCurl, utilizo Illustrator y Photoshop.

Tomo como inspiración el arte y la cultura marroquí, balinesa o hawaiana. Me gusta utilizar elementos locales en mi arte, como siluetas de puestos salvavidas, olas, transcripciones de fuentes y guiones en letra cursiva, collages con azulejo… Todo ello mezclado en un perfecto caos.

Y por supuesto, la música también ayuda a canalizar mi inspiración. Si estoy dibujando algo detallado y símil, me muevo entre el House y el Techno, haha, para así no distraerme con mi guitarra intentando aprender como tocar esa canción. Pero escucho Oasis, Bob Marley, me gusta la guitarra española, un poco de todo.

Ahora mismo, estoy trabajando en un proyecto para un Nuevo hotel que se ha construido en la ciudad surfera de Huntingon Beach, se llama Pasea Hotel and Spa. Han querido que creara “una mezcla” de obras que reflejaran el camino de un surfer alrededor del mundo. Es uno de los mejores proyectos ya que tengo libertad de ejecución.

A pesar de ello, este trabajo también tiene una cara B. Poner precio y vender mi arte, plantarme delante de alguien con traje y corbata y convencerles de que soy quien merece el trabajo y que se añada un cero más al final del cheque es la parte más dura de mi trabajo es. Has de ser tan bueno negociando como lo es tu arte en esencia. La autopromoción, publicitarse, trabajar duro y ser muy persistente es la clave del éxito.

Pero si lo que necesito es desconectar, mi vía de escape es ir a surfear a Newport Beach o a Hungtington en California o divagar sobre algún lugar al que me gustaría ir de viaje de surf…viajar es la clave. Recientemente, he visitado el sur de Francia y algo de España y ha sido realmente positivo poder apreciar la arquitectura, el modo en que la gente vive y disfruta la vida.

ALEX KRASTEV: The search doesn´t care about holders.

A trip to the best waves of the world just in a Tee. Ceaseless swells on a canvas. Perfect ordered sets in a fin. Alex Krastev is a hungry surfer that dreams with the sea despite of having a daily surf at the Californian Beaches. Owner of its own art and photography company, Future Seas, he has work in projects with RipCurl, Carver or Quiksilver. So yes, maybe you are wearing one of his ítems or you have in your room his RipCurl Padang Padang poster. Moroccan culture lover, his Work has that new “Old School” touch of someone who is not in real favour of the use of technology during the creative process.

I grew up in Bulgaria till age of 17, and after that my family moved to Southern Morocco – Agadir. In Bulgaria I started skateboarding, and with that I got fascinated with all the skate art on the boards.

In Morocco the whole surf scene there I gradually transferred all my interest to the surf art and its life style, and I think that’s the most solid inspiration till today.

About my own style I could say I am a multi faced artist within the surf and skate industry and lifestyle. I do take photos, I paint, I do paper collages, I love illustrate with ink… I use Morocco’s distinctive culture as a background and base for all my work.

But I change my methods depending of the project. I like to use organic materials for paint like wood and paper, and even styrofoam ( just like the one used in surfboards ). If I am working on designing all the T-shirt art for RipCurl I use Illustrator and Photoshop.

I take inspiration from Moroccos art and culture, Hawaiian and Balineese culture. I like to use local elements for my art, like silhouettes for life guard towers, wave art, a lot’s of font’s and scripts done in a cursive font’s, collages from existing tiles… All that mixed in a perfect chaos.

And of course, from music too. If I am drawing something detailed and similar I listen to House and techno ha ha, that way I don’t have to distract myself with my guitar and try to learn how to play the song. But I listen to Oasis, Bob Marley, I like flamenco guitar, a little bit of everything.

I am currently working on a project for a new Hotel that has been built in the Surf City of Huntington Beach, it’s Called Pasea Hotel and Spa. They wanted me to create a “Blend” of art reflecting a surfer’s path around the globe, and each piece to be executed in a different style. Like a collage of art, from different places of the Earth. It’s one of the best projects, because I have freedom of execution.

But this job has a dark side too. Pricing and selling my art, and standing in front of someone with a tie and a suite, and trying to convince them that I am the guy for the job and add one extra zero behind the check is the worst part for me. You have to be as good in negotiating as you’re in the art it self. Self promotion and advertisement, hard work and being persistent is the key for success.

But if I need to disconnect, my favourite way to get away from routine is to go surf in Newport Beach or Huntington Beach California or dream about a place like I am actually on a surf trip…Traveling is a key! Recently I visited southern France – and a little bit of Spain, and it was really cool to see the architecture, the why people live and enjoy life.
