Contadnos cómo ha sido la preparación del proceso de grabación de este nuevo trabajo …
Nuestro nuevo sencillo “In The Morning” nos tomó mucho tiempo y pasó por muchas formas diferentes antes de convertirse en la canción que lanzamos. Comenzó con la melodía principal del teclado que Eli escribió en el Minimoog, la melodía vocal en la que se basa la forma y una grabación de Harry tocando un bucle de batería electrónica. Hubo algunas versiones diferentes con diferentes grabaciones de batería, una con todo un interludio y sonidos de saxofón locos que no llegaron a la versión final. Finalmente, decidimos que debería ser una grabación más concisa con un enfoque más simple, algo con tambores contundentes, una parte de bajo principal y una voz principal que se siente como si estuviera viva.
¿Dónde has grabado y por qué eliges ese lugar de estudio?
Grabamos principalmente en Cosmic Zoo en Los Ángeles, el estudio propiedad y operado por Daddy Kev / nuestro sello Alpha Pup Records. Kev ha sido lo suficientemente amable como para dejarnos grabar allí y configurarlo a veces durante días para grabar música. También fuimos más meticulosos con nuestra grabación y nuestra mezcla que nunca antes, y fuimos muy exigentes acerca de qué partes agregar y quitar. A menudo grabamos algo que pensábamos que agregaría valor a la canción, solo para darnos cuenta más tarde de que no era necesario o que no era correcto, y quitábamos cosas y las cortábamos hasta que se sentía bien.
¿Hay algún concepto general en este álbum en términos de música y letras, producción, etc. o has elegido diferentes ideas para cada canción, producción, etc.?
Un gran tema para este récord es el crecimiento. Hay muchas letras sobre aprender a aceptar, sobre aceptar lo que es tu vida y lo que no es, sobre sentir que tienes que aprender y crecer. Pero incluso más allá de las letras, muchas de las canciones muestran cómo hemos crecido como artistas desde nuestro último disco, y todas las canciones ilustran su propio crecimiento. Sin embargo, con todo lo dicho, la mayoría de las canciones tienen una forma totalmente individual de convertirse en el producto final. Algunos comenzaron como pequeñas ideas en el piano; algunas fueron canciones completamente desarrolladas antes de que comenzáramos a grabarlas; algunos comenzaron como improvisaciones instrumentales improvisadas que cortamos y enredamos. Pero a pesar de lo diferentes que son, creo que se unen maravillosamente como un producto final complementario.
Sobre los conciertos y giras para presentar este nuevo disco … ¿qué tienes en mente?
Definitivamente queremos recorrer el mundo con este disco tanto como sea posible. Nos mantenemos activos en Los Ángeles durante el ciclo de lanzamiento, y en 2 semanas estamos haciendo una pequeña gira por Tijuana y el norte de México. Luego planeamos hacer una gira por la costa oeste de EE. UU. + Costa Este más adelante este año, con suerte, intercalada con algunos festivales. También nos encantaría llegar a Europa… Sabemos que tenemos fans allí, ¡pero necesitamos ayuda para salir! ¿Nos ayudais?
¿En qué formatos habeis planeado lanzar el álbum, físico (cd, lp …) y digital?
Planeamos lanzar vinilo, CD y cassette además de digital. Nos encanta el vinilo y parece que a nuestros fanáticos también les gusta. ¡Estamos realmente entusiasmados con la nueva carátula del álbum y no podemos esperar a verla en una portada de disco de vinilo!
¿Quién se encarga de hacer la obra de arte de este nuevo trabajo y por qué habeis elegido trabajar con él?
La portada es de Wiley Wallace, un artista de Arizona. Encontramos su arte en la web y nos enamoramos de una pieza suya que pensamos que encajaba muy bien en nuestro rollo. Esperamos trabajar más con él en el futuro.
Sabemos que es dificil de hacer, pero… elige una canción destacada en el álbum y dinos por qué has elegido ese tema.
Una canción destacada para mí (Harry) es “Echo Mountain”. Creo que es una canción muy progresiva en cuanto a su estructura, creo que las actuaciones que capturamos son nítidas y fuertes, y fue una de mis canciones favoritas para trabajar. Me encanta lo pesada que es la canción con la guitarra, y nuestro plan es seguir haciendo mas cosas pesadas con la guitarra, en esa linea.

Creo que este disco es el mejor hasta ahora, ¡y espero que nuestro público también lo piense! Estamos entusiasmados de lanzar este álbum después de aproximadamente 2 años de trabajo y estamos con muchas ganas para seguir trabajando en el próximo.

“Photosynthesis”, the new LP from The Breathing Effect, is epic, lush, and unpredictable. It illustrates a synthesis of psychedelic sound design, progressive songwriting, and meticulous production. The first single from the record, “In The Morning,” sees the band’s unique performance style underlining an experimental song form. From front to back, the listener will find that no two songs are alike, yet they all belong to the same aural universe. The Breathing Effect has once again delivered a truly original work that transforms with each new listen. “Photosynthesis” will be released via Alpha Pup on digital formats worldwide on March 27, 2020.
Hello, please, tell us how has been the preparation of recording process of this new work…
Our new single In The Morning is one that took a long time and went through many different forms before becoming the song we released. It started with the main keyboard melody that Eli wrote on the Minimoog, vocal melody that the form is built around, and a recording of Harry playing to an electronic drum loop. There were a few different versions with different drum recordings, one with a whole interlude and crazy saxophone sounds that didn’t make it into the final version. Eventually we decided it should be a more concise recording with a simpler approach, something with hard-hitting drums, a lead bass part, and a main vocal that feels like it’s alive.
Where you have recorded and why you choose that studio place?
We recorded mostly at Cosmic Zoo in Los Angeles, the studio owned and operated by Daddy Kev / our label Alpha Pup Records. Kev has been gracious enough to let us record there and set up sometimes for days at a time to record music. Toward the end, we did some overdubbing in other smaller production studios, but most of the music was recorded at Cosmic Zoo.
What you would say its the main difference between this new work and the past one?
With this whole record, we were more focused on the songwriting and making sure our performance, instrumentation, and arrangement support the songs. We were also more meticulous with our recording and our mixing than ever before, and were very discerning about what parts to add and take away. We often recorded something we thought would add value to the song, only to later realize that it wasn’t necessary or wasn’t right, and we’d take stuff away and chop things up until it felt just right.
Is any general concept in this album in music and lyrics terms, production, etc… or you have chosen different ideas for each song, production, etc…?
A big theme for this record is growth. There are a lot of lyrics about learning to accept, about accepting what your life is and what it isn’t, about feeling like you have to learn and grow. But even beyond the lyrics, many of the songs showcase how we have grown as artists since our last record, and all of the songs illustrate a growth of their own. However, with all that said, most of the songs have a totally individual way that they grew into the finished product. Some started as little ideas on the piano; some were fully fleshed out songs before we started recording them; some began as instrumental improvised jams that we chopped up and messed with. But as different as they all are, I think they come together beautifully as a complementary final product.
About the gigs and tours to present this new record… what you have in mind to do?
We definitely want to tour this record around as much as possible. We are staying active in LA during the release cycle, and in 2 weeks we are doing a short tour around Tijuana and Northern Mexico. Then we plan on doing a US west coast + east coast tour later this year, hopefully interspersed with some festivals. We’d also love to get to Europe … we know we have fans there but we need help getting out there! Help us?
In what formats you have planned release the album, physical (cd lp…) and digital, and why these formats?
We plan on releasing Vinyl, CD, and cassette in addition to digital. We love vinyl and it seems our fans like it as well. We’re really stoked on the new album art and can’t wait to see it on a vinyl record cover!
Who is in charge for doing the artwork of this new work, and why you have chosen work with them?
The front cover art is by Wiley Wallace, an artist from Arizona. We found his art online and fell in love with a piece of his that we thought fit the record really well. We hope to work more with him in the future.

A song highlight for me (Harry) is Echo Mountain. I think it’s a very progressive song as far as its structure, I think the performances we captured are crisp and tight, and it was one of my favorite songs to work on of everything in our catalog. I love how guitar-heavy the song is and Iplan on us doing more guitar heavy stuff in the future.
