{english below} Cuando se habla de música del desierto, muchos pensamos en bandas como Kyuss o Queens of the Stone Age como dos de sus principales representantes, ¿pero quienes son los pioneros de este tipo de música?. La respuesta es muy fácil, Fatso Jetson, quienes junto a algunas otras bandas a finales de los ochenta y principios de los noventa comenzaron con las “Generator Parties” y sentaron las bases de una nueva manera de entender el rock. Hemos hablado con el hombre que lo inició todo, Mario Lalli, con el motivo del lanzamiento del nuevo disco de Fatso Jetson, “Idle Hands”. Un trabajo que se ha hecho esperar mas de un lustro desde su anterior disco “Archaic Volumes”, publicado en 2010. Para nosotros es todo un placer traeros a una de las figuras mas emblemáticas del rock desértico. Esperamos que lo disfrutéis.
Habladnos de cómo ha sido el proceso de preparación y grabación de “Idle Hands”
El material para este álbum ha sido escrito mayormente por mi y por mi hijo a lo largo del último año. Tony Tornay ha co-escrito algunas canciones, así como Lawrence Lalli. También hemos escrito algunas canciones en el estudio, nos encanta la atmosfera que tiene, es muy relajante y se siente como en casa. He escrito mucha música allí en el pasado. Algunas de las canciones del disco han estado en nuestro set de directo durante varios meses antes de grabarlas, y algunas nunca las hemos tocado en directo. Para esas necesitábamos un poco mas de trabajo en el estudio.
¿Dónde habéis grabado y por que habéis grabado allí?
Hemos planeado grabar en el Rancho de la Luna, en Joshua Tree, California, por mas de un año. He grabado muchas veces allí con otros proyectos, (Desert Sessions, Desert Orchestra, etc…) pero nunca lo había hecho con Fatso Jetson. El Rancho es muy familiar y reconfortante para el espíritu. Hay muchos instrumentos increíbles, guitarras, órganos y cientos de pedales de efectos con los que experimentar. Cocinábamos nuestras comidas allí mismo en el estudio y dormíamos en una casita justo detrás del Rancho, ha sido genial.
¿Cuál dirías que es la mayor diferencia entre este “Idle Hands” y vuestro disco anterior “Archaic Volumes”?
La mayor diferencia principalmente ha sido la colaboración entre mi hijo Dino y yo a la hora de escribir las canciones. Ha sido una experiencia realmente especial para mi. Además estamos empezando a desarrollar un poco mas las canciones para no quedarnos solo en su aspecto mas rockero.
¿Hay algún concepto general que una todas las canciones del disco o habéis optado por incluir diferentes ideas?
Lo hay, en realidad. Estas canciones han sido escritas en un periodo muy difícil para mi y mi familia. Hemos perdido nuestra casa, hemos tenido que mudarnos, he tenido algunos problemas con la sobriedad y para colmo el negocio familiar también desapareció. Son las cosas de la vida, pero sin haber tenido a la música ahí para ayudarme a procesarlo y superarlo todo habría sido mucho más difícil, estoy seguro. Muchas de las canciones, letristicamente hablando, han surgido de lidiar con estos cambios y pérdidas. La lucha de permanecer creativo contra todo.
¿Cuáles son vuestros planes de gira para “Idle Hands”?. ¿Vendréis a Europa?
Giraremos por Europa en Octubre, y por la costa oeste de Estados Unidos en Noviembre. Aquí podéis ver las fechas completas de nuestra gira
¿En que formatos estará disponible el disco?
El disco tendrá dos ediciones en LP, una en color negro y otra en color, una en CD y otra en digital. También esperamos hacer una edición limitada de cassettes. Nuestro formato de elección es el vinilo, pero lo importante es que la gente escuche nuestra música.
¿Quién se ha encargado del artwork de “Idle Hands”?
Ahora mismo trabajo con una pintora maravillosa de Carolina del Norte. Su nombre es Kelly Keith, la conocí mientras hacia de tour manager para la banda OFF! y ella vendía merchandising para una de las bandas teloneras. Me enseñó su arte y algunas fotos de su página web y quedé inmediatamente enamorado. Ha hecho tres portadas para mi hasta el momento y la quiero muchísimo. Aquí tenéis su página: www.kellykeith.net
Nos gustaría que, a pesar de que sabemos que es algo difícil, eligieras una canción a destacar de vuestro disco y nos contarais porque la habéis elegido.
Voy a elegir un extraño momento de espontaneidad que nos salió de maravilla, la canción “Portuguese Dream”. Es una colaboración con mi viejo amigo Sean Wheeler, mi hijo y toda la banda improvisando en el Rancho. Sean se encargó de la parte de spoken Word, un poema precioso. Un tema extraño en su nacimiento pero muy bonito, ¡y la banda esta que se sale!. ¡Fatso Jetson total!.

Hello, please, tell us how has been the preparation of recording process of this new work…
The material for this album was written over the last year by myself and my son mostly …Tony Tornay has cowrote some music as well as Lawrence Lalli in a couple tracks. We did write the tunes “Royal Family” and “Wire Wheels and Robots” in the studio at Rancho …we enjoy the atmosphere there .. It’s very relaxed and feels like our home… I have written much music there in the past. Some of these songs had been in our live set for months befor recording others we had never played live… For those more craft in the studio was needed.
Where you have recorded and why you choose that studio place?
We had planned to record this record at Rancho de la Luna in Joshua Tree Ca for over a year … I had recorded there many times with other projects…(Desert Sessions, Desert Orquestra) but never with Fatso Jetson.
The Rancho is very homey and warms the spirit, very comfortable to be …many wonderful instruments, guitars, organs, hundreds of effects pedals to experiment with. We cook our meals right there in the studio and sleep at a casita just behind the Ranch…it was great.
What you would say its the main difference between this new work and the past one?
Mainly was the writing collaboration between my son Dino and my self.. This was really special experience for me… Also we are starting to. Craft songs a bit more, less of just a rocking out approach.
Is any general concept in this album in mysic and lyrics terms, production, etc… or you have choosen different ideas for each song, production, etc…?
There is actually.. These songs came out of a difficult period for my family…we lost our home, had to move, I have had some struggles with sobriety and my family’s Buisness also went under… Things of life but difficult and without music to help to process it all a work through it.. It would be much more difficult I’m sure. Many of the songs lyrically came out of coping with these changes and loss.

About the gigs and tours to present this new record… what you have in mind to do?
We are touring all of Europe in Oct and a west coast tour of the states in November

In what formats you have planned release the album, physical (cd lp…) and digital, and why these formats?
The album will be available in LP both color and black vinyl, cd and digital, I hope to also do a limited edition of cassettes as well

Who is in charge for doing the artwork of this new work, and why you have choosen work with them?
Right now I work with a wonderful painter from North Carolina, her name is Kelly Keith. I met Kelly while I was your managing the band OFF! ..she was selling merch for one of the other bands and showed be her art … Pics from her website

Sean did this spoken word piece.. A beautiful poem .. Strange in delivery but beautiful… And the band is rocking off kilter
