Jeff, cuéntanos cómo ha sido la preparación de este nuevo álbum.

¿Dónde has grabado y por qué eliges has elegido ese estudio?
Grabé la mayor parte de la música en el estudio de mi casa en Altadena, California, y parte de ella fue grabada en The Headlands Center For The Arts en Sausalito, California, donde fui artista residente durante 3 semanas en el otoño de 2018. Algunos fueron grabados y mezclados en el estudio de mi coproductor Paul Bryan en Pacific Palisades, California. Quería capturar un sentimiento solitario en la música, por eso elegí grabar muchas cosas personales.
¿Cuál dirías que es la principal diferencia entre tu nuevo álbum y los anteriores?
La principal diferencia es que estoy explorando espacios físicos en la música del nuevo álbum. Hay muchos más sonido drone y loops que se repiten durante largos períodos de tiempo, y hago mucha música yo en casi todo el álbum.
¿Hay algún concepto general en este álbum en términos de música y letras, producción, etc. o has elegido diferentes ideas para cada canción, producción, etc.?
Cada canción se aborda de manera diferente al final. Originalmente intenté combinar algunas cosas, pero no funcionó, por lo que se convirtieron en piezas musicales separadas. Hay muchas pruebas y errores en mi proceso de creación de la música. La idea general es crear un espacio para que el oyente encuentre consuelo en la música.

¿En qué formatos ha planeado lanzar el álbum, físico (cd, lp …) y digital, y por qué estos formatos?
Me encanta el formato del LP, y siempre es mi primer deseo cuando hago un nuevo proyecto, por lo que el álbum se secuencia en dos caras de aproximadamente 19 minutos por pieza. Por eso el entorno de escucha ideal para ello es el LP. Me encanta el sonido, la sensación y la obra de arte de un LP. Me encantan las tiendas de discos, de hecho solía trabajar en una tienda de discos. CD y digital se explican por sí mismos.
¿Quién se encarga de hacer la obra de arte de la banda y por qué elegiste trabajar con ellos?
Elegí la foto de mi madre para la portada. La encontré y pensé que era hermoso, y que invitaba al espectador a imaginar una historia detrás de ella. Scottie McNiece y David Allen de International Anthem tuvieron mucho que ver con la dirección visual de la obra de arte. Craig Hanson presentó el diseño.

As guitarist for Chicago post-rock icons Tortoise, he’s taken the group in new and challenging directions that have kept them at the forefront of pop creativity for the last twenty years. As of late, however, Parker has established himself as one of the most formidable solo talents in modenn jazz. Hello, please, tell us how has been the preparation of this new álbum?
I use a process of recording to compose, sometimes using sampling and looping, and I sometimes recreate it with live musicians in the recording studio. Sometimes I mix it with improvising. Sometimes I just try to make a song. All of these ways are present on SUITE FOR MAX BROWN. In the end, I’m just trying to create a strong suite of music.
Where you have recorded and why you choose that studio place?
I recorded most of the music at my home studio in Altadena, California, and some of it was recorded at The Headlands Center For The Arts in Sausalito, California, where I was an Artist-In-Residence for 3 weeks in the fall of 2018. Some was recorded and mixed at my co-producer Paul Bryan’s studio in Pacific Palisades, California. I wanted to capture a solitary feeling in the music, which was why I chose to record a lot of it by myself.
What you would say its the main difference between your new album and past ones?
The main difference is that I’m exploring physical spaces in the music on the new album. There are a lot more drones, and samples that loop for long periods of time, and I’m making a lot of the music alone on the new album.
Is any general concept in this album in mysic and lyrics terms, production, etc… or you have choosen different ideas for each song, production, etc…?
Each song is approached differently in the end. I had originally tried to combine a few things, but it didn’t work out so they turned into separate pieces of music. There’s a lot of trial and error in my music-making process. The general idea is to create a space for the listener to find comfort in the music.
About the gigs and tours to present this new record… what you have in mind to do?
The band and I just wrapped up a 3 week tour of Europe. We’ll also be playing shows in the US and Japan throughout the year, and back to Europe in the fall.
In what formats you have planned release the album, physical (cd lp…) and digital, and why these formats?
I love the format of the LP, and it is always the first consideration for me when I make a new project- so the album is sequenced into two sides of about 19 minutes a piece. The ideal listening environment for it is on LP. I love the sound, feel and artwork of the LP, I came up listening to and buying records. I love record stores – I used to work in a record store. CD and digital are self-explanatory.
How is in charge for doing the artwork of the band, and why you have choosen work with them?
I chose the photo of my Mother on the cover. I came across it and thought it was beautiful – and that it invited the viewer to imagine a story behind it. Scottie McNiece and David Allen from International Anthem had a lot to do with the visual direction of the artwork. Craig Hanson laid out the design.

I love “Build A Nest”. My daughter Ruby sings beautifully on it, and I like its strangeness. It’s a song about slowing down, and thinking about life.
Still living in Chicago?
I moved away from Chicago in 2013. My home has been in the Los Angeles area since 2013.
How is the future with your others music, Tortoise…?
Tortoise are still a band. We’re going to play a few shows in Japan in February, and hope to start making a new album sometime in late 2020.
