Lovely Little Girls puede ser un nombre un poco extraño para una banda, pero os aseguramos que es lo menos raro que vais a encontrar dentro de esta particular formación. Para empezar tienen uno de los artworks mas bizarros con los que nos hayamos enfrentado últimamente, y para terminar tienen una de las propuestas musicales mas extrañas, a la par que interesantes y divertidas, en un mundo lleno de propuestas extrañas. Hemos hablado con Gregory Jacobsen, creador del arwork y principal compositor de Lovely Little Girls sobre este último trabajo, “Glistening Vivid Splash”, que podemos aseguraros no dejará indiferente a nadie.
Contadnos un poco como ha sido el proceso de creación y grabación de “Glistening Vivid Splash”.
Hemos grabado en el estudio del sótano de Greg Norman. El ha trabajado con Steve Albini en el estudio Electric Audio durante muchos años, donde ha grabado y mezclado grandes discos. Es un amigo y fan de la banda, y trabajar en su estudio personal ha quitado mucha presión al proceso.
¿Qué diferencias hay entre este trabajo y vuestro anterior disco “Cleaning The Filth From A Delicate Frame”?
“Glistening Vivid Splash” tiene material que fue desarrollado mas por una banda que por mi (Gregory Jacobsen) y Alex Perkolup. Traíamos muchas demos al grupo, y también hay mucho mas intercambio musical en las composiciones, y una fluidez mas orgánica en las composiciones y en el orden de los temas.
¿Existe algún concepto general que se pueda aplicar al disco, o habéis optado por incluir diferentes ideas a lo largo de todo el trabajo?
Escribimos canciones que son suites, con una progresión lineal de eventos/emociones en mente. Esto a veces se traduce en progresiones mas tradicionales, y otras veces es mas caótico y desordenado. Nuestro concepto general va sobre el sexo, la comida y la humillación. Todo ello visto desde un prisma de mordiente humor negro.
¿Qué tenéis planeado para presentar y promocionar “Glistening Vivid Splash”?
Hemos hecho una gira corta por los estados del sur de Estados Unidos. Nunca antes habíamos estado por allí, y la respuesta ha sido extremadamente positiva. Ojala tuviésemos mas tiempo para tocar en directo.
¿En que formatos aparecerá el disco y por qué habéis decidido trabajar en dichos formatos?
El disco será lanzado en Cd, Lp y digital. El Cd y la descarga digital son documentos, mientras que el Lp es un objeto artístico. Skin Graft Records tiene un largo historial de convertir sus lanzamientos físicos en algo realmente especial, como la reedición de US Mapple cuya cubierta esta hecha de aluminio. El artwork que acompaña al lanzamiento, específicamente el del formato Lp, es muy importante para nosotros, ya que proporciona un cierto contexto a nuestra música.
¿Quién se ha encargado del artwork y por qué lo habéis elegido?
Yo (Gregory Jacobsen) hago todo el artwork de Lovely Little Girls. Mi arte es la inspiración directa de las canciones y actuaciones en directo de esta banda.
¿Podéis elegir una canción especial de este disco y contarnos por qué es especial?
Mi canción favorita es “Unseemly Circumstance”. Tiene un fantástico tiempo raro, un ritmo funky y un estribillo pegadizo, pero luego se introduce en terrenos inexplorados. También tiene las mejores letras: “Ample grease for the painful position, late bloom circumcision, bend white thighs, knife it deep”. También es un ejemplo de como escribimos como grupo.

Tell us how was the process of creating and recording of “Glistening Vivid Splash”
We recorded with Greg Norman in his basement studio. He has worked at Steve Albini’s studio Electric Audio for many years, and he has recorded and mixed some fantastic records. He’s a friend and fan of the band, and working in his personal studio took some of the pressure off.
What are the diferences between this work and your previous album “Cleaning The Dirt From A Delicate Frame”?
“Glistening Vivid Splash” has material that was developed as a band, rather than me (Gregory Jacobsen) and Alex Perkolup working on demos and bringing them to a group. There’s more instrumental interplay at work, and a better organic flow with the compositions and track order.
Is there any general concept in this album in terms of music, lyrics, production, etc… or have you choosen different ideas for each song?
We write song suites with a linear progression of events/emotions in mind. This sometimes comes about in a very straightforward way, other times it’s through shuffling parts and songs around. Our general concepts deal with sex, food, humiliation. It’s all approached with a biting black humor.
What are your plans to present and promote “Glistening Vivid Splash”?
We did a short tour of Southern US states. We have never been down there before, and the response was extremely positive. I wish there was more time to tour.
In what formats have you planned to release the album, and why these formats?
It is released on CD, LP, and digital. CD and digital are documents, while the LP is an art object. Skin Graft Records has a long history of making their physical releases special, such as the US Maple reissue that came in an aluminum sleeve. The accompanying artwork for the record, specifically the large format LP cover, is important for us to convey more of a context.
Who is in charge of the artwork and why did you decide to work with him?
I do all the artwork for Lovely Little Girls. My art is the direct inspiration for the songs and performance aspect of the Lovely Little Girls.

Unseemly Circumstance – This is my favorite song. It has a great weird odd-time funky groove, and catchy chorus, but then goes off into uncharted territory. It also has the best lyrics: “Ample grease for the painful position, late bloom circumcision, bend white thighs, knife it deep.” This is also a song that is an example of our group writing.
