Llegar al impresionante Valle del Duero con prisa puede ser un error fatal. Aquí, el tiempo se suspende, llevándote en un viaje sin prisas a través de la historia y los sentidos. En un entorno donde la gastronomía, el relax y la naturaleza son los grandes aliados, la Portugal más tradicional se revela en todo su esplendor, invitándote a desconectar y dejarte llevar.
Esta región, conocida mundialmente por su rica tradición vinícola, fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 2001, y no es de extrañar, ya que no solo el producto merece un monumentos, si no, que el paisaje generado a través de la explotación vinícola, ha hecho de estas tierras un lugar tan bello, que pocas fotos hacen justicia, tienes que venir a verlo: montañas, viñedos y el río Duero serpenteando en un cuadro de ensueño.
Hasta que llegamos aquí, en nuestra mente, el imaginario del Valle del Duero nos llevaba a la cuna del famoso vino de Oporto, cuyas terrazas en las colinas, que se extienden junto al río Duero, pero este lugar es mucho más que eso, sin desmerecer la tan preciada joya, que sin duda ha marcado la historia de esta región. Aquí el escenario es fundamental, las condiciones las hacen tan únicas que pocos sitios en el mundo pueden presumir como lo hacen ellos, es el escenario perfecto no solo para la producción, si no para un paisaje que, a cada paso, te deja sin aliento y es aquí donde se erige la Quinta da Vacaria, donde comienza nuestro viaje. La Quinta da Vacaria, una de las propiedades más antiguas del Valle del Duero, fundada en 1916 donde los ríos Corgo y Duero se encuentran, sus 42 hectáreas de viñedos se despliegan entre los 50 y los 500 metros de altitud, todo un espectáculo.
Una quinta, esa finca rural enfocada a la producción de vino, es el alma de esta región, una conexión profunda entre la gente, transmitiendo identidad vinícola generación tras generación. Es en este contexto de historia y naturaleza donde, en agosto de 2024, abrió sus puertas el Hotel Torel Quinta da Vacaria. Con sus 5 estrellas, esta joya se sitúa en Peso da Régua, un pequeño municipio que ha crecido de la mano de la producción de los vinos, desarrollando un carácter marcado por su historia.

Torel Quinta da Vacaria: legado y futuro
Un hotel que no solo impresiona por sus instalaciones, sino también por su enfoque en el diseño, el arte y, por supuesto, la conexión única con el paisaje del Duero. Obra del estudio Luís Miguel Oliveira, en colaboración con Studio Astolfi, es una verdadera obra maestra de diseño. Su arquitectura fusiona modernidad y tradición con un edificio semi-enterrado que se integra perfectamente en el paisaje. Ofrece vistas privilegiadas al río Duero y cuenta con dos piscinas, un amplio spa con tratamientos de vinoterapia e hidroterapia, y áreas dedicadas al bienestar. La madera de roble y nogal, los tejidos refinados y el arte contemporáneo se combinan para crear una atmósfera sofisticada y acogedora. El equilibrio entre tradición y modernidad se respira en cada rincón, ofreciendo una experiencia sensorial única.
El enfoque sostenible del hotel, que respeta el entorno natural y se refleja en los detalles, cada habitación, “calma, pureza o silencio”, está diseñada para ofrecer una experiencia multisensorial, donde el confort, el arte y la naturaleza se dan la mano. Hasta aquí todo es perfecto e impresiona entrar en la habitación, donde todo está absolutamente medido para que esa experiencia multisensorial se eleve al máximo: la temperatura ideal para soportar las frías noches a los pies del Duero (es lo que tiene dormir a un salto de este río), una cama perfectamente vestida, que te atrapa, como si de una nube de algodón se tratara, una terraza propia con alberca para los días más calurosos, y dónde ver el nítido cielo estrellado que cubre como si del techo de una catedral se tratara, vistas al río, y a la piscina del hotel, que agazapada, se integra en el paisaje formando parte de él. La habitación esconde secretos, una televisión camuflada a modo de espejo o un mini bar emparedado. Dormir aquí es realmente una experiencia, te hacen sentir especial con sus detalles, como cuando visitas a un amigo o familiar. Nos encantó la nota de despedida de la última noche y los chocolates que aparecían en la habitación.

La Quinta da Vacaria, con siglos de historia vinícola, produce una variedad de vinos excepcionales que incluyen tintos, blancos y, por supuesto, los famosos vinos de Oporto. Su bodega, que también funciona como museo, narra la historia de la finca, ofreciendo visitas guiadas, catas exclusivas y maridajes gastronómicos. El museo no es solo un espacio para admirar, es un viaje en el tiempo donde el pasado se encuentra con el presente, mostrándonos las tradiciones e innovaciones que han dado forma a la identidad de esta región vinícola. Un lugar multifuncional que va más allá de la simple cata de vinos: es un espacio de descubrimiento, aprendizaje y deleite sensorial.
Esta es algunas de las actividades que te ofrece la quinta, las catas de vino te sitúan, especialmente si vas pensando que allí solo se bebe oporto, pues no, la verdad es tan amplia que es difícil retener todo lo que se produce aquí, pero sí decir, que no ha habido un solo vino que no hayamos probado que no haya sido un “guau”, después de beberlo. Muy sorprendidos con el rosado que producen, de touriga nacional y con los tawnys, que a modo de postre, ponen broche de oro a cualquier cena o reunión.
Más allá del vino: productos locales de alta calidad
Además del vino, aquí también se produce aceite de oliva virgen extra de alta calidad, elaborado de forma artesanal a partir de aceitunas locales, utilizando métodos tradicionales y sistemas de cultivo biológico, este aceite destaca por su pureza y sabor distintivo. Un producto que, al igual que el vino, forma parte de la identidad de la región y es ideal para maridar con los platos locales. Y es en cada comida y desayuno, que se ofrecen sus aceites, con el característico y especial pan portugués, que no puedes dejar de pellizcar y mojar. Una delicia. Ademas de alimentos de la huerta propia, hortalizas, cítricos, etc…
Sabores que evocan el Duero
En el Torel Quinta da Vacaria, la gastronomía es una experiencia que va más allá de la comida, como si de un escenario de Wes Anderson se tratara, el restaurante 16 Legoas, cálido, acogedor y con una luz perfectamente medida, Su restaurante, ofrece una propuesta que fusiona los sabores locales con técnicas modernas. Enfocado en la cocina tradicional portuguesa, especialmente la de la región del Duero, el restaurante pone sobre la mesa opciones frescas inspiradas en la tradición mediterránea. El chef Vitor Gomes, conocido por su enfoque creativo y técnico, que es para ponerle un monumento, utiliza ingredientes locales y frescos, priorizando la sostenibilidad y el respeto por el entorno. Cada plato es una obra de arte que explora la frescura de los productos, los sabores vibrantes y la historia de la región y es que se nota, porque cuando estás varios días en Portugal, comiendo bacalao en diferentes lugares, y pruebas el de aqui, de verdad que te reenamoras de este plato, subiendo escalones de tu orden de preferencias. En otra dirección, el arroz seco con cordero, el tartar y la tarta de queso, son las joyas de la carta, que siendo honestos, no hay nada que desecharía.
¿Pero qué hace especial a este espacio gastronómico? un laboratorio gastronómico donde su chef experimenta con los mejores productos locales, fusionándolos para crear experiencias únicas y haciendo el deleite de los paladares de sus comensales. de momento, este trabajo se refleja en el restaurante, pero este espacio abrirá en pocos meses y, sin duda, será otro de los grandes atractivos del lugar, aquí no se puede elegir solo uno.
Bienestar y desconexión: un lujo esencial
Pero si creías que todo esto no podía mejorar, el Torel Quinta da Vacaria te sorprende en cada rincón, desde el momento que entras, y te reciben sonrientes para hacerte esperar lo justo, junto a una majestuosa y elegante chimenea, o cuando decides pasar por el bar, donde cada detalle decorativo parece haber sido puesto para ti, y es que no solo ofrece habitaciones de lujo, sino que también cuenta con una piscina exterior, gimnasio, un spa con vistas al Duero, y salas de masajes, vinoterapia y tratamientos de belleza elaborados con productos naturales creados en su propio laboratorio. Aquí se permite que juegues y experimentes, podrás aprender a hacer tus propias cremas y mezclar aceites a partir de ingredientes naturales.
Ambas piscinas son las discretas aliadas de este hotel, infinitas y con vistas al Duero, la exterior y perfectamente mimetizada con el entorno, es uno de los ejes de los espacios exteriores, donde además de nadar o tomar el sol, puedes disfrutar de la oferta del bar. La piscina cubierta casi soterrada bajo el exterior y con una cristalera de vértigo, te mantiene en contexto a la vez que te relajas, sea nadando o en los distintos espacios de hidroterapia que ofrece su spa.
Peso da Régua y Lamego: joyas del Duero
El hotel está ubicado en Peso da Régua, un pequeño municipio que es considerado el corazón de la región vinícola del Duero. Con una población de no más de 10.000 habitantes, este pintoresco pueblo tiene un acceso privilegiado a la ruta fluvial del Duero, que conecta la región con otras localidades cercanas. Su nombre, que proviene de la palabra portuguesa “peso” (pesar), hace referencia a las antiguas prácticas comerciales de pesar las mercancías que llegaban al puerto. Aquí, el río no sólo da forma al paisaje, sino que también perfila el modo de vida de sus habitantes, marcando el ritmo de los paseos por la ribera y del emblemático puente que cruza el Duero. Puedes también visitar su museo o simplemente dejarte llevar por las calles al sol, pero si buscas más y más historia, Lamego es parada imprescindible.
En el distrito de Viseu, destaca por su patrimonio cultural, arquitectónico y su entorno natural impresionante. Se encuentra a unos 20 km al sureste de Peso da Régua, y es una de las ciudades más antiguas de Portugal, con una historia que se remonta a tiempos romanos. En la Edad Media, Lamego fue un importante centro neurálgico y hoy en día se puede ver reflejada su riqueza histórica en monumentos como la Catedral de Lamego, un impresionante edificio barroco, el Santuario de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, y las murallas medievales que rodean la ciudad. El Santuario es uno de los principales puntos de interés y se accede por una escalinata monumental de 686 escalones. Llegar arriba es todo un reto y simbolizan el esfuerzo y la devoción de los fieles que suben para rendir homenaje a la Virgen. Seas religioso o no, merece la pena subir, puedes hacerlo por las escaleras o través del bosque que rodea el santuario, ambas opciones son gustosas y una vez arriba, las vistas son increíbles y te permite ver la extensión de esta ciudad. Abajo de nuevo, paseamos por las calles, donde encontramos preciosas callejuelas, un museo, ubicado en un palacio epicospal, un teatro, tienditas regentadas por amables señoras y un ambiente juvenil y estudiantil que denotan que aquí pasan cosas.
Lamego y Peso da Régua son dos destinos clave en el Valle del Duero, ambos lugares ofrecen una mezcla perfecta de historia, cultura, naturaleza y gastronomía, lo que los convierte en una visita obligada si pasas por aquí, y no solo por todo lo que te hemos contado, si además de explorar una de las regiones vinícolas más famosas del mundo, conocer su historia y comer de cine, buscas actividades al aire libre, desde aquí tienes infinidad de rutas de senderismo para todos los niveles, otra forma de conocer la historia y esencia de un lugar que cautiva solo con verlo.
Un adiós con sabor a saudade
Regresar de la Quinta da Vacaria deja una huella profunda. Es más que un hotel o una región; es una experiencia que se vive con el corazón. Entre viñedos y montañas, tradición y modernidad, el Duero se convierte en un refugio para el alma. Si buscas un lugar donde el tiempo se detenga y la vida se sienta más plena, este rincón del mundo te está esperando.

Arriving at the impressive Douro Valley in a rush could be a fatal mistake. Here, time suspends itself, taking you on a leisurely journey through history and the senses. In a setting where gastronomy, relaxation, and nature are the main allies, the most traditional Portugal reveals itself in all its splendor, inviting you to disconnect and let go.
This region, globally known for its rich wine tradition, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001, and it’s no wonder, as not only the product deserves a monument, but the landscape shaped by winemaking has turned this land into such a beautiful place that few photos do it justice; you have to come and see it: mountains, vineyards, and the Douro River meandering through a dreamy landscape.
Before we arrived here, our imagination of the Douro Valley led us to the birthplace of the famous Port wine, with terraces on the hills that extend along the Douro River, but this place is much more than that, without diminishing the highly cherished gem that has certainly shaped the history of this region. Here, the setting is essential; the conditions are so unique that few places in the world can boast of such a place. It’s the perfect backdrop not only for production but for a landscape that, with each step, leaves you breathless, and here stands Quinta da Vacaria, where our journey begins. Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the Douro Valley, founded in 1916 where the Corgo and Douro rivers meet, spans 42 hectares of vineyards, from 50 to 500 meters in altitude, a true spectacle.
A quinta, a rural estate focused on wine production, is the soul of this region, a deep connection between the people, transmitting winemaking identity from generation to generation. Its architecture blends modernity and tradition with a semi-buried building that fits perfectly into the landscape. It offers privileged views of the Douro River and features two pools, a large spa with vinotherapy and hydrotherapy treatments, and areas dedicated to well-being. Oak and walnut wood, refined fabrics, and contemporary art combine to create a sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere. The balance between tradition and modernity is felt in every corner, offering a unique sensory experience.
The hotel’s sustainable approach, which respects the natural surroundings and is reflected in the details, makes each room a “calm, pure, or silent” experience, designed to offer a multisensory journey where comfort, art, and nature come together. Everything is perfect, and entering the room is impressive, with every detail measured to elevate this multisensory experience to the maximum: the ideal temperature to endure the chilly nights at the foot of the Douro (that’s what happens when you sleep so close to the river), a perfectly dressed bed that envelops you as if it were a cotton cloud, a private terrace with a small pool for the hotter days, and the opportunity to watch the clear starry sky covering you like the ceiling of a cathedral, views of the river, and the hotel’s pool, hidden and integrated into the landscape. The room hides secrets, like a TV camouflaged as a mirror or a mini-bar tucked away. Sleeping here is truly an experience, making you feel special with their thoughtful details, like the farewell note on the last night and the chocolates left in the room.
Wine as the Star: Leisure, Tradition, and Narrative
Quinta da Vacaria, with centuries of winemaking history, produces a variety of exceptional wines, including reds, whites, and, of course, the famous Port wines. Its winery, which also functions as a museum, tells the story of the estate, offering guided tours, exclusive tastings, and gastronomic pairings. The museum is not just a space for admiration; it’s a journey through time where the past meets the present, showcasing the traditions and innovations that have shaped this wine region’s identity. A multifunctional place that goes beyond simple wine tasting: it’s a space for discovery, learning, and sensory delight.
These are just some of the activities offered by the estate. Wine tastings place you, especially if you thought you’d only be drinking Port, but no—the truth is, it’s so vast that it’s hard to keep track of everything produced here. However, I can say there hasn’t been a wine we’ve tasted that hasn’t made us say “wow” after drinking it. We were particularly impressed with the rosé they produce from Touriga Nacional and the Tawnys, which, as a dessert, cap off any dinner or gathering with a golden touch.
Beyond Wine: High-Quality Local Products
Besides wine, high-quality extra virgin olive oil is also produced here, handcrafted from local olives using traditional methods and organic farming systems. This oil stands out for its purity and distinctive flavor. Like wine, it is part of the region’s identity and is ideal for pairing with local dishes. At every meal and breakfast, their oils are served alongside the characteristic and special Portuguese bread, which you can’t resist pinching and dipping. A true delight.
Flavors that Evoke the Douro
At Torel Quinta da Vacaria, gastronomy is an experience that goes beyond food, almost as if you were in a Wes Anderson set. The 16 Leguas restaurant, warm and cozy with perfectly measured lighting, offers a menu that blends local flavors with modern techniques. Focused on traditional Portuguese cuisine, especially from the Douro region, the restaurant serves fresh options inspired by Mediterranean traditions. Chef Vitor Gomes, known for his creative and technical approach, is truly a genius. He uses local and fresh ingredients, prioritizing sustainability and respect for the environment. Each dish is a work of art that explores the freshness of the products, vibrant flavors, and the region’s history. And you can really taste it, because after trying cod in various places in Portugal, when you try it here, you truly fall in love with the dish again, moving it up in your ranking of favorites. In a different direction, the dry rice with lamb, the tartare, and the cheesecake are gems on the menu, and honestly, there’s nothing I would leave out.
So, what makes this dining space special? A gastronomic laboratory where the chef experiments with the best local products, combining them to create unique experiences that delight diners’ palates. For now, this work is reflected in the restaurant, but this space will open in a few months, and it will undoubtedly become one of the major attractions of the place. Here, you can’t choose just one.
Well-being and Disconnect: An Essential Luxury
But if you thought it couldn’t get any better, Torel Quinta da Vacaria surprises you at every turn, from the moment you enter and are greeted with smiles to make you wait just the right amount, next to a majestic and elegant fireplace, or when you decide to pass by the bar, where every decorative detail seems to have been placed just for you. Not only does it offer luxury rooms, but it also features an outdoor pool, a gym, a spa with views of the Douro, and massage rooms, vinotherapy, and beauty treatments made with natural products created in their own laboratory. Here, you are allowed to play and experiment, learning to make your own creams and mix oils from natural ingredients.
Both pools are the discreet allies of this hotel, infinity pools with views of the Douro—the outdoor one, perfectly blended with the environment, is one of the main attractions of the outdoor spaces, where, in addition to swimming or sunbathing, you can enjoy the bar’s offerings. The indoor pool, almost buried under the exterior with a vertigo-inducing glass wall, keeps you in context while you relax, whether swimming or in the various hydrotherapy spaces offered by their spa.
Peso da Régua and Lamego: Gems of the Douro
The hotel is located in Peso da Régua, a small municipality considered the heart of the Douro wine region. With a population of no more than 10,000 inhabitants, this picturesque town has privileged access to the Douro River’s fluvial route, which connects the region to nearby towns. Its name, derived from the Portuguese word “peso” (to weigh), refers to the ancient practices of weighing goods arriving at the port. Here, the river not only shapes the landscape but also defines the lifestyle of its people, marking the rhythm of walks along the riverbank and the iconic bridge crossing the Douro. You can also visit its museum or simply let yourself be carried away by the streets in the sun. But if you seek more history, Lamego is a must-visit. In the Viseu district, it stands out for its cultural, architectural heritage, and stunning natural surroundings. Located about 20 km southeast of Peso da Régua, it is one of the oldest cities in Portugal, with a history dating back to Roman times. In the Middle Ages, Lamego was an important hub, and today, its historical wealth is reflected in monuments such as the Lamego Cathedral, an impressive Baroque building, the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, and the medieval walls surrounding the city. The Sanctuary is one of the main attractions, accessed by a monumental staircase of 686 steps. Reaching the top is quite a challenge, and it symbolizes the effort and devotion of the faithful who ascend to honor the Virgin. Whether religious or not, it’s worth climbing, and you can do it either by the stairs or through the forest surrounding the sanctuary—both options are pleasant, and once at the top, the views are incredible, offering a panoramic view of the city. Back on the streets, we find beautiful alleys, a museum in an episcopal palace, a theater, small shops run by friendly ladies, and a youthful, student atmosphere, showing that things are happening here.
Lamego and Peso da Régua are two key destinations in the Douro Valley, both offering a perfect blend of history, culture, nature, and gastronomy, making them a must-visit if you’re here. Not only does this region offer the opportunity to explore one of the world’s most famous wine regions, but also to discover its history and enjoy exceptional food.
