Sam, es la mente y el corazón de Aligned, una empresa social que aprovecha otras empresas sociales con el fin de propiciar conexiones entre personas e ideas. Una plataforma de triple resultado en la que priman las acciones en beneficio de la gente y del medio ambiente. Nos sentamos con Sam Lindsay, que nos habla de sus experiencias, intereses y de cómo una simple idea puede servir de inspiración para el mundo.
Aotearoa, Nueva Zelanda, es el lugar donde nací, pero llevo unos cuantos años sin vivir ya allí. Donde podía encontrárseme de manera más habitual era en el Sudeste Asiático, pero ahora, ando a caballo entre Barcelona y Nueva York.
Creo que mi niñez en Aotearoa y los viajes que vinieron después, me han instigado un fuerte sentido del trabajo para el bien de los otros. La naturaleza también ha jugado un papel muy importante en mi crecimiento y me singue encontrando hacer actividades al aire libre. Viajar por su parte, me ha enseñado que la felicidades no proviene de lo material. La felicidad proviene de las experiencias, incluso de las más pequeñas que, en ocasiones, son las que aportan mayor alegría.
Para mí, hacer dinero no es tan importante, si no el modo y el por qué lo haces. Me reconozco como un apasionado de esa gente a la que le importa más el aporte positivo de sus esfuerzos que de aquella que aquella que escala en una gran corporación si saber quién tiene al lado.
Mi interés en el comercio de tripe resultado comenzó hace ocho años mientras comía quínoa estando de mochilero en Bolivia. Inmerso en un brainstorming sobre ideas de negocio, me di cuenta del positivo potencial social, medioambiental y económico de la semilla. Siguiendo mi planteamiento de que un negocio debe funcionar para el beneficio de todos y nuestro planeta, he pasado los últimos seis años en Tailandia, Singapur, Malasia, Sri Lanka Myanmar, Bután y Nueva Zelanza como desarrollador de negocios para diferentes empresas sociales y ONGs.
En la actualidad, estoy trabajando muy duro para Aligned, una comunidad para creadores del cambio de un modo creativo. Nuestro foco está en aumentar el número de acciones creativas que impacten de manera positiva en asuntos sociales o medioambientales. La plataforma proporciona un punto de encuentro para para fotógrafos, escultores, músicos, artistas callejeros, diseñadores o cualquier persona concienciada con estas causas y que quiera encontrar peer y otra gente que le apoye. Les permitimos ganar visibilidad, fondos y la colaboración con otros “aligneds” que quieran ayudad a coproducir el cambio.
Mi figura histórica preferida sería Winston Churchill. Ha aportado grandes planteamientos sobre cómo proceder en los momentos más difíciles. Por ejemplo, “El éxito consiste en saltar de fallo en fallo sin perder el entusiasmo”. También era muy bueno en fundir a todo aquel que le faltaba al respeto. Cuando en una ocasión fue acusado de estar “asquerosamente borracho” en el partido, el Primer Ministro respondió: “Querido, tú eres feo. Es más, eres asquerosamente feo. Pero mañana, yo estaré sobrio y tu seguirás siendo feo”, hahahaha.
¿Mi talento secreto? Reto a cualquiera que crea que puede preparar mejor huevos escalfados mejor que yo. Y también a alguien que me gane al ping-pong. J
Durante mi tiempo libre, me encanta esquiar o surfear, dependiendo de si hace sol o hay nieve.

ALIGNED: CONNECTIONS TO CHANGE THE WORLD.
The creativity of a quinoa dish depends on the hunger of the diner it has to face. And if that diner is someone who prefers to give his plate up to anyone hungrier (physically or of ideas) than him, the result has Sam Lindsay as name.
Sam is the mind and heart of Aligned, a social enterprise which harnesses other social enterprises to help each to connect to other. A triple-bottom-line platform in which the benefit of the people and the environment comes first. We had a talk with Sam Lindsay about his experiences, interests and about how a simple idea can become an inspiration for the world.
I’m originally from Aotearoa/New Zealand but have not lived there for a number of years now. I’ve most recently been based out of South East Asia but now am between Barcelona and New York.
I think my childhood in Aotearoa and subsequent travel has instilled a strong sense of working for the betterment of place and people. Nature has played a big role in my upbringing and I continue to love being in the outdoors for activities such as skiing and surfing. Travel has taught me that happiness doesn’t come from acquiring more things. Happiness comes from experiences, and often the simple ones bring the greatest joy.
Furthermore, making money is not as important today as why and how you make it. I’m super passionate about meeting people who care more about the positive outcome of their efforts, rather than climbing a corporate ladder with their head in the sand.
My interest in triple-bottom-line business first began 8 years ago when eating Quinoa as a backpacker in Bolivia. I was brainstorming business ideas and got excited about the potentially positive social, environmental and economic benefits of the grain. Following my epiphany that business must work for the benefit of all people, and our planet I have spent the last 6 years in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bhutan, and New Zealand as a Business Development Manager for a variety of Social Enterprises and NGO’s.
Currently, I’m working hard on Aligned which is a community for creative change-makers. Our focus is growing creative ways of impacting social and/or environmental issues. The platform provides a connection point for conscious photographers, sculptors, musicians, street artists, product designers, anyone who creates on a regular basis to connect with likeminded peers and supporters. We enable them to gain exposure, funding and collaboration with passionate “aligned” supporters who want to help co-produce change.
My favourite historical figure is Winston Churchill. He had a lot of great thoughts about making it through hard times. For instance, “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm”. He was also good at burning people who disrespected him. When once accused of being ‘disgustingly drunk’ at a party, the Prime Minister responded: ‘My dear, you are ugly, and what’s more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be ugly.’ Hahahaha.
My secret talent? I challenge anyone to better my poached egg ability. And, beat me at table tennis J
For leisure I love to ski or surf, depending on the snow or sun.
