Este artista estadounidense creció en la costa de North Kingstown, en Rhode Island, y actualmente vive en la costa oeste, en Orange County, California. Su trayectoria profesional se ha desarrollado en estudios de tatuaje, el diseño gráfico e ilustraciones en la industria de la música (Pearl Jam, Bad Religion, Minor Threat…) y el skateboard (Deathwish, Bajer, Shake Junt…), y su trabajo se caracteriza por mezclar las Bellas Artes con un toque dulce y amargo al mismo tiempo. Actualmente trabaja como artista independiente y recientemente acaba de crear su propia línea de ropa, la empresa Gritty Arts. “Ser capaz de crear y expresarme siempre ha sido mi objetivo desde que era un niño. Siempre ha sido mi meta, ganarme la vida haciendo lo que me gusta”, dice.
Nos explica que constantemente se siente inspirado por las películas que ve, los libros que lee y la vida misma, y en cuanto al proceso creativo que sigue, dice que se basa en: “recopilar imágenes que me inspiran y recrearlas en mi estudio. Escribir cualquier pensamiento que pueda tener sobre el proyecto. Realizar algunos bocetos para conseguir aclarar estos pensamientos y empezar a jugar con las composiciones. Entonces paso el dibujo a la cartulina y llego a mi parte favorita, el entintado, que hago de manera tradicional y me encanta”.
Ha estado trabajando en su propia marca Gritty Arts desarrollando su propia linea de camisetas, “ha sido muy divertido! Estoy trabajando realmente duro en mi propia línea de ropa. Me encantaría evolucionar y no ponerme límites. Todo por la libertad y la diversión, la inspiración en el arte, la música y el viaje de la vida!”, dice.
Cuenta que una de las cosas más difíciles que ha hecho fue dar el salto de trabajar como ilustrador y diseñador gráfico independiente. “He trabajado muy duro y ser parte de estas empresas era difícil. Nunca quise poner un tope en lo que era posible. Aprendí que si no te rindes, llegas a donde quieras en la vida. Así que nunca te rindas en tus sueños aun cuando pienses que puede ser una locura”, aconseja.
Sobre la inspiración para desarrollar sus ideas, señala que ‘todo’ le inspira, siempre que tenga una gran taza de café solo! Además, dice: “soy un gran aficionado al buen cine y la música. Disfruto de las historias, cómics, las novelas gráficas, la fotografía y del trabajo de otros artistas. Si todo ello lo acompañas con una gran rebanada de pizza, puede haber un buen resultado”.
Su personaje histórico favorito es Jesús. “Fe y amor. Él me ha enseñado a tener fe y amor en todo lo que hago. Tener fe y amor te permite hacer muchas cosas en la vida. El miedo mata los sueños. Confiar, tener fe y amor en lo que hago, es lo que me ha ayudado en mi crecimiento como artista”, explica.
La canción que ronda su cabeza más a menudo es Gimme Shelter, de Los Rolling Stones. “Me encantan los Stones, puedo escuchar esa canción como tres veces seguidas. Cuando las chicas empiezan a gritar (guerra, niños, un tiro a lo lejos) es poderosa. Eso, acompañado de una porción de pizza de pepperoni de la costa este, te hace flipar”, dice.
Su talento secreto es cocinar: “puedo coger lo que sea, cualquier comida al azar y que esté bueno, jaja. Mi esposa dice que soy el MacGyver de la cocina”.
Y finalmente, su manera favorita de relajarse tras un día ajetreado es estar con su esposa Liz y salir con sus dos hijos Luck y Rocco. “Después de un día bueno o malo siempre tienes a tu familia. Ir al parque o una noche de cine en casa y descansar con tus seres queridos es la mejor manera de relajarse”, termina diciendo.

STEVE LOMBARDI’S SKATEPUNK ARTWORK
This artist grew up on the east coast in North Kingstown, Rhode Island with the Zoo Crew of Mt View. He flipped coasts 6 years ago and currently he lives on the west coast in Orange County, California.
His professional profile has been built from working in tattoo shops, graphics and illustrations in the music and skateboard industry a side of fine art and a hint of sweet and sour. He currently works as a freelance artist and his illustrations and graphic are created using brush and ink. He recently just created his own apparel company Gritty Arts. Being able to create and express himself has always been the goal since he was a child. “It’s the goal of life. Make a living doing what you love”, he says.
He explains that he’s constantly being inspired by movies, books and life: “I gather images that inspire me and tack them up in my studio. I will write down whatever thoughts I may have on the project at hand just to get them out of my head and on paper. I doodle out some rough sketches just to get these thoughts a little clearer and start toying with compositions. From there I dial in the sketches I think will work best. I transfer my sketch to Bristol board and that’s when I get to my favorite part, inking. I ink the traditional way of dipping into some ink with a brush. I love it”.
He has been working in his own appearel company Gritty Arts, “that’s been a lot of fun! We are working hard at the moment on our own apparel company, Gritty Arts. I really just want that to evolve on its own and not put restraints on it. Its all about freedom and fun, inspired by art, music and life’s ride!”, says.
He explains to us that one of the hardest things was taking that leap from working as an in-house illustrator and graphic designer to a freelance artist and working on my own. I worked so hard to land these amazing jobs and to be apart of such rad companies, walking away from that was hard. “I just never wanted to put a cap on what was possible. If anything it just showed me when you work hard and don’t give up, you will get to wherever you want to go in life. So never give up on your dreams even when people think your crazy”, he recommends.
About the inspiration to develop his ideas, he points ‘everything’ and a big pot of black coffee! Also, says: “I am really big into good movies and music. I enjoy stories, comics, novels photography, and other artists. A great slice of pizza can go a long way too”.
His favourite historical figure is Jesus. “Faith and Love. He has taught me to have faith and love in everything I do. Having faith and love will allow you to take a lot of leaps in life. Fear is a killer and it loves killing dreams. Be confident, have faith and love in what you do, that has helped my growth as an artist”, explains.
The song which gets stuck in his head most often is Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones. “I love the Stones. I play that song 3 times in a row sometimes. When the girls start shouting (War, children, its just a shot away) its powerful. Mix in an East Coast slice of pepperoni pizza, mind blown”, says.
His secret talent is cooking: “I can grab a bunch or random food and make it work haha. There were times throughout my life when I was so broke I had no choice but to make things work so I got good at it. My wife says I am the MacGyver of the kitchen”.
And finally, his favourite way to unwind after a busy day is spending time with his wife Liz and hanging out with his two sons Luke and Rocco. “After a long day good or bad you always have family. Whether it’s a trip to the park or a movie night at house the best way to unwind and relax is with the ones you love”, concludes.
